Legislative and Governmental Affairs
OVERVIEW
The USGLSA monitors and reviews legislative and governmental policies which
impact the ability to operate commercial vessels in the Great Lakes in a safe,
reliable and efficient manner. We work closely with the Great Lakes
Congressional delegation, government agencies and other associations to advise
and educate on Great Lakes international maritime activities.
The USGLSA is active in the following initiatives:
- Support for the Great Lakes Observing System as operated by NOAA's Center for
Operational Oceanographic Products and Services to support real-time
hydrographic observing systems including water level gauges, including P.O.R.T.S.
at the Soo, the advancement of air gap technology, current and wind modeling
- Maintenance dredging at all critical navigation areas as managed by the US Army
Corps of Engineers
- Development of the Great Lakes Navigation Study as performed by the US Army
Corps of Engineers
- Research and development for shipboard ballast treatment technology
- Compliance with all security mandates under the Maritime Transportation Security
Act of 2002
- Compliance with all security mandates under the Trade Act of 2002
- Development of a Great Lakes Maritime Transportation Needs Study
- All issues which support the initiatives of the National Association of Maritime
Organizations and the Marine Navigation Safety Coalition
